Communicating with the “Greatest Generation”
Private and independent are two words that best describe our eldest generation (those in their 80’s and 90’s), and explain why communication is often an obstacle. This generation grew up with a different value system and in order to avoid conflict; understanding on your part is paramount to success. You must understand that they are wildly independent and not terribly gracious about accepting help or advice. They don’t like to discuss their problems and they are often withholding in showing signs of appreciation when help comes their way. They are private. Discussions about health and financial issues are something they simply do not participate in. Old age is a journey that has brought them wisdom and knowledge and they expect to be treated with quiet reverence and dignity.
By treating those in the “Great Generation” with the deference that they are entitled to, will go miles in keeping communication open and avoiding isolation and frustration on your part. Tread gently. Be patient. We can learn much from their experiences and how they dealt with problems. Learn as much as you can about this generation. We are losing them quickly and they offer us a precious look into a world that we will never know. As difficult as they can be the education and wisdom they offer is priceless.
If you or anyone in your family is having serious challenges with communication either with your aging loved one or with another member of your family, you might want to consider getting some help. There are numerous ways to receive support from Cindy on The Care Company site.
